We
use 20 gallon aquaria that have a cracked side (taped up, of course).
The base is potting soil or litter from the forest floor (or dead
leaves from anywhere). It is good to moisten the base with two quarts
of water. I placed short log section that I found and cut in the
woods near my house. The log is half rotten (soggy wood for half
its diameter). So far two beetles have shown up. Mushrooms of two
kinds have sprouted. I saw a tiny ant and a harvestman that was so
small it might have been a spider. I spray water from a mister into
the tank each morning and keep a clear plastic lid on top. The one
in the window, I shade from direct sun so that the temperature does
not climb too high. I should put a thermometer inside. One center
keeps their mossy log on top a pile of rotten wood in a closed container
in a closet in the basement. There is a ceiling light in the closet.
How well do you think their moss is doing? |
