Science Firsthand At The Valley Community
Association
Come participate in Science Firsthand at the Valley Community
Association. We are presently looking for mentors to work
with students, in a maximum student to mentor ratio of 3:1, investigating
the many wonders in all fields of science. Science Firsthand is one
of the many programs within the VCA’s Striving for Excellence
After School Program. The program runs Monday through Friday
from 2:30-5:30pm with 45 minute block programs. Science Firsthand
also runs an Astronomy Club on Fridays from 6:30-7:30pm.
Along with Science Firsthand’s Science Mentoring, The Striving
for Excellence After School Program also incorporates Field Trips,
Group & Individual Counseling, Family Events, Prevention Workshops
& Trainings, Community Service Projects, Art Class, Nature Ed-Ventures
Science Program, Physical Education, Computer Instruction, and Homework
Help.
In addition to the after school program, The Valley also has senior
programming throughout the week dedicated to bringing the seniors
in the community together. There is a food pantry that serves the
local community, a daycare, open gym starting at 5:30pm every weekday,
multi-subject tutoring for students, and both Boy and Girl Scout meetings.
The neighborhood surrounding the Valley Community Association is a
great place for any activities related to science. There is a large
open field directly behind the Valley, a pond, a nature trail leading
to the Buffalo River, and many little alcoves for searching out animal
and plant life. It is the perfect place for exploring the natural
world in Buffalo’s urban environment. We often see deer, foxes,
birds, insects, amphibians, and many insects. The children also hold
a strong interest in the physical sciences, and have recently been
experimenting with sound and other wave producing mechanisms.
